As we say goodbye to the last few weeks of summer, many of us are thinking ahead to a new season and back-to-school learning. What better way to bring in the new season than supporting Literacy Month?
Teaching others to read is going to look very different this year and here are some of the ways you can support your community this season.
Literacy Month 2020
This year, Literacy Month focuses on literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. With so many conversations about how to support and offer help in the education sector, we’ve compiled a list of some excellent charity partners who are in need of supplies and help during the back-to-school season.
ONE TO ONE Literacy
ONE TO ONE Literacy helps build a community through literacy by pairing struggling young readers with trained literacy tutors to help grow their skills and self-confidence. Since their start in 1989, they have helped 20,000 children improve their literacy skills and inspired life-long readers.
As we enter the fall season, ONE TO ONE Literacy is looking to reopen their tutoring services so that they can continue to read with students as they head back to school.
Victoria Literacy Connection
Victoria Literacy Connection provides both one-on-one and small group literacy tutoring to children, youth and adults in Greater Victoria, including new Canadians and inmates.
By encouraging their tutoring sessions to take place over video conferencing, Victoria Literacy Connection has continued to support literacy education throughout COVID-19. Their programming now includes a free E-Reading Book Club which has encouraged young readers to continue their education virtually. The book club includes regular, French immersion and English language learning for newer Canadians.
Decoda Literacy Solutions
As the only province-wide literacy organization in British Columbia, Decoda Literacy Solutions supports community-based literacy programs in over 400 communities across BC. By supporting children and families, youth, adults, seniors, Indigenous and immigrant communities, Decoda hopes to improve quality of life in the home at work and in the community.
