Backpack Buddies exists to fill the weekend hunger gap for children in our Metro Vancouver inner-city schools.
1. Many children in the Lower Mainland’s inner-city schools, who rely heavily on free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs during the school week, go home to meager or no meals on the weekends. Backpack Buddies aims to tackle this often-invisible problem by putting much-needed food directly in the hands of the children who need it. On Friday afternoons, we deliver backpacks filled with food for these children to take home for the weekend.
2. Central to what we do at Backpack Buddies is our kids helping kids model and there is no other program like it. Each backpack is made possible by children at Buddy Schools (Donor schools) around Metro Vancouver who raise funds, purchase food, and pack each bag of weekend meals for a child who needs it. Backpack Buddies provides an important avenue for children to understand local food security issues and the potential for each person to make a difference.
3. Last year, Backpack Buddies delivered over 2500 backpacks of food every month to children in need. But we need to do more! Our goal for the 2018/2019 school year is to increase our deliveries to 5000 a month.

All the children and youth we serve are classified as vulnerable. They live in low income (low wages, under employed) families or live in poverty (families on income assistance or no income). Many live in families with addiction issues. And, approximately 40% of the children have cognitive disabilities, chronic health impairments, or serious mental illnesses. All have difficulty obtaining enough food, let alone nutritious food.
