On #BellLet’sTalk Day, we’re highlighting mental health and a few charities who work tirelessly to support the people who are affected.
The issue of mental health may be closer to home than you realize. In fact, 1 in 5 Canadians will personally experience a mental health problem or illness in any given year. Perhaps you’re currently facing challenges with your mental health, have been affected in the past, or know somebody who has.
about half of the Canadian population will have or have had a mental illness by the age of 40.
There are a number of charities in Vancouver and Victoria working endlessly to support those affected by mental health issues. Here’s a few you can support using our #BrokersOfGood.
New View Mental Health Society
The New View Mental Health Society creates an environment for growth and recovery for people challenged by mental illness through providing housing, employment, social and personal growth opportunities. They focus on the capacities and strengths of their clientele, not their disabilities or weaknesses.
Vancouver Women’s Health Collective
The VWHC supports self-identified women with their health, wellness and equity through feminist approaches to advocacy, shared knowledge and low-barrier programs. Their free programming and services include: a community clinic, yoga, acupuncture, pilates, counselling and a wide range of workshops.
Threshold Housing Society
Threshold Housing Society tackles youth homelessness, with mental health being one of the main contributing factors to youth experiencing homelessness. According to the 2018 Point in Time Count, at least 156 youth were experiencing homelessness in Greater Victoria and mental health was identified by the youth as their top service need.
