For five years, the realtors at Modern Real Estate have dedicated part of their lives to the charity organization helmed by their umbrella company, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting women’s shelters across Canada. In fact, it was this shared passion for giving back and women’s rights that brought together owners Saira Waters and Tasha Medve, in the first place, before Raise the Roof for Shelter was even started.
From the Heart in Support of the Community
Before becoming business partners, Saira and Tasha tested out the potential of their partnership by hosting a fundraising event together — the first Raise the Roof for Shelter. They ended up working flawlessly together on that project. It was the beginning for the annual fundraising event and this amazing duo.
“We love going out and helping people, whether that’s helping them find a happy place to call home, or creating events to help raise money for our community. It’s an integral part of our business outlook but also a large part of who we are as individuals and as a team.”
Together with their team, Saira and Tasha have undertaken a business outlook that places a focus on supporting the community and helping from the heart, in the case of both regular clients and individuals in need. They attend as many fundraisers to support local shelters as possible, and donate portions of their sales commissions. They also take part in charity challenges, actively advocate for the facilities they support, and host their own fundraising parties and classes. The pinnacle of their efforts is the Raise the Roof for Shelter fundraiser, which is celebrating its 5th instalment on September 22nd.
Saira and Tasha have undertaken a business outlook that places a focus on supporting the community and helping from the heart, in the case of both regular clients and individuals in need.
“Since we started Raise the Roof, we’ve seen our client base grow to others that are like-minded,” says Saira. “Our tribe — our network and clients, has grown because of our work with the shelters. We’re meeting with others that want to see stronger communities too.”
Raise the Roof for Shelter
The 5th Annual Raise The Roof for Shelter fundraiser in support of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation happened on Friday, September 22nd. Hosted at the Robert Bateman Centre, every penny collected goes directly to the shelters. The guests have the opportunity to mingle and network among great food and a silent auction, and go home knowing they’ve supported an excellent cause.
Surpassing their goal, for the 5th anniversary, the event raised $12,000. Proceeds go to the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, and right back into the community, to four local shelters: Victoria Women’s Transition House, The Cridge Centre for the Family, Sooke Transition House Society and Margaret Laurence House.
At every step, new connections are made with people who feel just as strongly about women’s rights and safety.
With the donations from passionate supporters like Saira and Tasha, The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation supports women and children who not only need a place out of the rain and cold, but are also escaping domestic violence situations. Each branch across the country supports the very communities in which their realtors reside; more than 30,000 individuals have been helped by the proceeds, so far. The Foundation is the largest organization exclusively supporting women’s shelters and violence prevention.
“When we first started Raise the Roof, we were passionate about helping people. But it wasn’t until we had women come up to us to tell us their story that we became invested in this cause. It’s incredibly powerful to hear someone tell you what this shelter meant to them and their children. So now, this fundraiser means so much more than what it was 5 years ago. We’re even more passionate and dedicated to the cause.”
Since its inaugural event in 2013, Raise the Roof for Shelter has raised almost $18,000 for this very necessary organization, and this year alone, Saira and Tasha are aiming for $10,000.
The Modern Real Estate team recognizes the importance of supporting community by giving back, be it raising money, advocacy, or hands-on volunteering. At every step, new connections are made with people who feel just as strongly about women’s rights and safety.
These connections make a tangible difference in the community, and Saira finds they also further her own enjoyment in the workplace – each interaction solidifies the fact that others out there share her vision, that together real, lasting improvements can be achieved. This dedication to change has identified Modern Real Estate as a pillar in the community.
